In March 2006, the Trust purchased 80 acres
of land located in the Mount Tipton Wilderness Area, approximately
30 miles north of Kingman. This is the fourth property acquired
in Arizona since the Trust received an acquisition grant from
an anonymous donor in Spring 2005.
View from the protected property
The protected land is located just outside
the developing area of Dolan Springs. This property was threatened
by residential development in the valley and a cherry-stem
road access that is excluded from the surrounding wilderness.
The frequently used trail to the summit of Mt. Tipton crosses
the property and wild horses use the water available on site,
which includes a wash from Lower Indian Springs located on
the edge of the land. The Trust is in the process of transferring
the property to the Bureau of Land Management for inclusion
in the surrounding wilderness area.
This acquisition is part of a larger effort
recently launched by the Trust to protect Arizona’s
designated wilderness by purchasing private land from willing
owners. Arizona has more than 4,000 acres of private land
within the boundaries of its BLM Wilderness Areas. The Trust
is currently working on more than 1,000 acres of projects
in the state.
