Much of the Trust’s work since its founding
in 1992 has focused on Colorado’s Wilderness Areas,
where we have acquired 5,218 acres in 107 parcels—substantially
reducing the threat of inholdings in the state. In March 2004,
the Trust completed a revised inventory and prioritization
of Colorado’s wilderness inholdings, which found that
over 7,200 acres of non-federal inholdings in 199 parcels
remain in designated Wilderness Areas. Of these, 4,198 are
potential development threats to the surrounding wilderness.
The Trust aims to reduce this amount by 50% (approximately
2,000 acres), with a focus on high and secondary priority
parcels. We believe that over the next several years we can
largely eliminate the threat of inholdings in the state.
