Land Purchased in Colorado's Holy Cross Wilderness

The Wilderness Land Trust acquired a 75 acre property that extends into the Holy Cross Wilderness Area in August 2005. The Trust will hold the property until funds are available to transfer it to the Wilderness.

Polar Star Lake, Holy Cross Wilderness, Colorado

The property, known as the Polar Star Lode, contains eight mining claims, a building site for a recreational cabin or yurt, and a portion of the Polar Star Lake. It is located on the western side of the Wilderness Area in Eagle County and is bordered in part by the White River National Forest. The property can be accessed by road during the summer from the town of Eagle and is approximately 1/4 mile from the Polar Star Inn and Karl’s Cabin—both part of the 10th Mountain Division hut system and popular back country skiing destinations. The property is crossed by both the New York Mountain Trail and the New York Lake Trail.

The Trust has previously preserved an additional 453 acres in 22 parcels in the Holy Cross Wilderness.
