Beauty Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA) - New Lands Protected
Location: southern; Riverside & San Diego Counties
Land preserved: 2,322 acres; 9 parcels
Activity: 2004 - present

Note: These properties are currently owned by the Trust and are awaiting transfer to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This WSA includes the largest blocks of undeveloped land in an area exploding with growth and is both a wildlife corridor and habitat for several endangered species—the California gnatchater and the Quino checkerspot butterfly.

Activity: 2006-present

Note: This land is currently owned by the Trust and is awaiting transfer to the Bureau of Land Management. These parcels are adjacent to the Mono Lake National Forest Scenic Area and are surrounded by seven BLM Wilderness Study Areas.

Note: This land is currently owned by the Trust and is awaiting transfer to the Bureau of Land Management. The Trust’s acquisition of this property while the Cache Creek area was proposed for wilderness contributed to the October 2006 passage of the Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act, which officially designated Cache Creek as Wilderness.

Cady Mountains Proposed Wilderness

Note: This parcel is currently owned by the Trust and is awaiting transfer to the Bureau of Land Management. The Cady Mountains proposed wilderness area is an island of key wildlife habitat easily accessed from Los Angeles and the developing region of Barstow. The proposed area is home to the Cady Mountains herd of desert bighorn sheep, as well as prairie falcons, golden eagles, Mojave fringed-toed lizards, and many other species.

Granite Mountain Wilderness Study Area - NEW

Note: This property is currently owned by the Trust and is awaiting transfer to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This WSA consists of sagebrush habitat, migrating sand dunes, basaltic plateaus, and granite ridges and contains several archaeological sites, including the historic wintering areas of the Mono Lake Paiutes.

This WSA contains multicolored canyons, cultural sites including salt and hunting camps used by Chemehuevi Native Americans, and intermittent lakes that provide habitat for wintering and migrating waterfowl and endangered shorebirds.

Timbered Crater Wilderness Study Area
Location: northern; Modoc County
Land preserved: 195 acres; 2 parcels
Activity: 2004-present

Note: These parcels are currently owned by the Trust and are awaiting transfer to the BLM. This area is bounded by the Shasta Trinity National Forest and the Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park and contains all of the Baker Cypress Natural Area. The Baker Cypress is a minor species of tree restricted to a small number of groves in Northern California and Southern Oregon. The WSA is also made up of a large lava flow which also supports a scattered population of mountain mahogany, incense cedar and ponderosa pine.

Tunnison Wilderness Study Area
Location: northern; Lassen County
Land preserved: 170 acres; 3 parcels
Activity: 2005-present

Note: These parcels are currently owned by The Wilderness Land Trust and are awaiting donation to the BLM. The Tunnison WSA includes Horse Lake Mountain, Tunnison Mountain and Willow Creek Canyon, which features petroglyphs and trout fishing. The area affords numerous opportunities for solitude, exploration and hiking.
