El Malpais National Monumnet Wilderness Study Area

This jagged landscape poured forth over the past million years. Lava flowed across the high desert creating an eerie world of lava tube caves, cinder cones, pressure ridges, and bridges.  A closer look reveals diverse flora and fauna. Prehistoric ruins, ancient cairns, and homesteads reveal the relationships that people have formed with this primeval place.
