The Wilderness Land Trust Completes Catalog of California
Inholdings
The Resources Legacy Fund provided the funds
and The Wilderness Land Trust completed the work to inventory
and prioritizes inholdings within the California Wild Heritage
Act, a bill to designate additional wilderness throughout
California.
As part of its Preserving Wild California program,
the Resources Legacy Fund wanted to create this comprehensive
information to help guide voluntary acquisition efforts. The
Wilderness Land Trust is the recognized expert in completing
such work having already completed prioritizations of inholdings
within existing wilderness areas in multiple western states.
Acquisition Grant Approved!!!
A grant has been approved by the Board of the Resources Legacy
Fund to provide money for the voluntary acquisition of high
priority inholdings within proposed wilderness areas. With
this support, The Wilderness Land Trust is able to pursue
the acquisition of high priority inholdings within these proposed
designated wilderness areas.
TWLT is aggressively addressing the issue of
wilderness inholdings in California. Half of all inholdings
within Forest Service designated wilderness areas are located
in California. In the past year, we have transferred three
wilderness inholdings to the Forest Service, making them part
of the wilderness that surrounds them. The Wilderness Land
Trust now owns 1280 acres of inholdings within designated
wilderness areas in California awaiting transfer to the United
States.
